You have no power over me!

Serious Sci-Fi # 11

The day the Earth stood still, yes the black and white movie, from 1951 or something like that. Really the year doesn’t matter with this one, its like old school to the max! That didn’t sound right, anyway this flick I believe is my first sci-fi film that I viewed when I was a young lad.

This film really works for an oldie, even now it rings true and as you can guess Hollywood is pumping a remake sometime next year although I can not fully confirm that. On to the flick and its premise, I must add all my reviews are based on countless viewings and not  current viewings, apparently in the 50’s there were many U.F.O. sightings happening in America. This movie was one of the first to tackle the subject with top notch acting and effects by the some of the best for their time. Really people were amazed at the effects with the flying saucers above Washington and other national landmarks.

Setting all disbelief aside aliens decide to travel to Earth and give us a message from other parts of the galaxy, something like ” get your ass in line” or we will make you. Tough subject for the time and of course all done with 50’s creepiness of Red scare paranoia and good writing. The film is fondly remembered for its signature line spoken only once or twice, ” klatu verata nicktu ” these words are ingrained into my conciseness.

Those words are probably best remembered for their use in a little horror film called ” army of darkness”, used mainly as a punch line, in this flick it keeps Gort from destroying the world. You see friends E.T in this case a man and his robot address the world over and demand peace. As the ufo lands and the pilot emerges from an opening the crowds and army gather round only to witness a humanoid being emerge with a rod of some kind in his hand. Of course one small movement causes a grunt to shoot and injure this alien an he is rushed to the hospital.

I won’t bore you with the details just know that this alien from another galaxy causes time to stop and all humans learn to quickly get their act together. I believe this film really stands the test of time, look for it at your favorite online vendors. If there is any oldies in this bloggesphere please by all means comment on what this film meant to you. End of line.
